How to Crop PDF Pages and Trim Margins
Cropping a PDF is useful when scans have wide white borders, exported slides include unwanted canvas space, or a page must fit a cleaner viewing area. A professional crop should preserve text, links, forms, annotations, and image quality. That means changing the PDF page boundary rather than taking a screenshot and rebuilding the document from pixels.
HatchMyPDF changes the page CropBox locally in the browser. It does not rasterize the page and does not upload the document. The original MediaBox and the underlying page content remain in the file.
Important: cropping is not redaction. Content outside the visible CropBox can remain recoverable. Never crop a PDF to hide confidential text, personal data, signatures, or account information.
What CropBox changes
A PDF page can contain several rectangular boundaries. MediaBox describes the physical page area. CropBox tells a viewer which part should normally be displayed or printed. When no CropBox is defined, viewers generally use MediaBox. Setting a smaller CropBox hides the outer region without rewriting the page’s text or graphics.
This approach preserves quality because no pixels are resampled. It also keeps searchable text and interactive objects best-effort. However, annotations or links that sit partly outside the new boundary may be difficult to reach, and different PDF viewers can expose hidden areas through print, editing, or inspection features.
Step-by-step: crop a PDF
- Open Crop PDF and choose one PDF up to 50 MB and 1,000 pages.
- Enter the password if the document is protected. It remains only in memory during the active session.
- Choose millimetres or inches. Millimetres are the default and work well for print documents; inches may be more convenient for Letter-based workflows.
- Drag the top, right, bottom, or left crop handle. Keyboard users can focus a handle and use the arrow keys; hold Shift for a larger step. Exact numeric fields remain available for repeatable margins.
- Select the current page, a custom page range, or all pages. On files with mixed page sizes, the same distance from each edge is applied instead of one absolute rectangle.
- Review the visible boundary and generate a new cropped copy.
How rotation affects crop margins
PDF rotation is stored separately from page content. A page rotated 90 degrees may look landscape even though its underlying coordinate system is portrait. The crop tool treats “top,” “right,” “bottom,” and “left” as the edges the user sees. Before writing CropBox, it converts those margins for page rotations of 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees.
This is especially important for scan batches where a few pages were rotated during capture. Without rotation-aware conversion, a top margin entered in the interface could be applied to the original left or bottom edge. Preview the current page when switching between portrait and landscape sections.
The exporter also enforces a minimum remaining size of 36 by 36 PDF points. This prevents an accidental drag or oversized numeric value from producing an effectively empty page.
Removing white margins from scans
Start with one representative page, but do not assume every scan has equal borders. If the scanner shifted pages left and right, a single “all pages” crop may cut useful content on some pages. Use a conservative shared margin or process separate page ranges with different settings.
Cropping does not reduce the size of scanned image data by itself. The hidden pixels remain in the PDF. If the objective is a smaller file rather than a cleaner visible boundary, review Compress PDF after cropping. Compression can affect visual quality, so retain the original and compare small text and line art.
Protected and signed documents
Changing CropBox modifies the PDF and invalidates an existing digital signature. A visible signature appearance may remain, but cryptographic validation should report that the file changed. Crop an unsigned working copy and sign the reviewed output again when validity matters.
For password-protected input, the tool restores AES-256 password protection with the same password by default. If protection cannot be rebuilt, it does not provide an unprotected intermediate result. Original permission flags can change as part of rebuilding the encryption dictionary.
Troubleshooting
Content disappears after applying the same margins to all pages
Mixed layouts may not have consistent white space. Return to the original, preview a representative page from each layout, and use custom page ranges. Reduce the largest edge values until all pages retain a safe inner area.
The cropped PDF still contains sensitive information
That is expected. CropBox is a viewing boundary, not deletion. Use a purpose-built redaction workflow that removes content objects and verifies the result. HatchMyPDF’s crop tool intentionally does not claim irreversible removal.
Links or annotations appear outside the page
Interactive objects are preserved best-effort, but a new visible boundary can hide part of them. Inspect links, form controls, comments, and stamps after cropping. If an annotation must remain usable, reduce the crop on that edge.
Arrange pages before cropping
If a file contains rotated, duplicated, or misplaced pages, use Organize PDF first. For simple rotation without reordering, Rotate PDF can prepare the page orientation before exact margins are chosen. Then crop, review, and save a separate copy so the original boundaries remain available.
